What is the National Institute of Ranking Framework and why it happened? Explained.

We recently got some news about NIRF, in which we learned that IIT Madras, IISc Bangalore, and IIT Bombay have become the top Higher education institution of India. What is NIRF?

The National Institute of Raking Framework (NIRF) was lunched by the Ministry of Human Resource development on 29th September 2015. This initiative is a framework of methodologies to rank Higher Education Institutions of India (HEIs). In previously, Higher Institution and Universities were ranked by Private Entities, especially by the News Magazines. When NIRF came into establishment, in the initial year it was happened to be a volunteer participation, however, in 20218 it has made compulsory for all Government and Government aided Higher Education Institution.

What are the Parmeter to assess the Higher Education Institutions?

To be ranked in the National Institute of Ranking Framework, all the Universities and Higher Education Institutions are assessed in the following parameters.

1-    Teaching and learning resources (TLR)

2-    Research and Professional Practice

3-    Graduation Outcome

4-    Outreach and Inclusivity

5-    Peer Perception

NIRF has list out best Higher Education Institution on 11 categories such as

Why has India decided to rank Higher Education Institutions? What is the background.

Government Run Higher Education Institution (HEIs) were not happy about their ranking in QS World University Ranking and The Times Higher Education Worlds University Ranking. In 2015, Parliament Winter Session Smriti Irani, who was the education minister had highlighted the causes of the poor performances in the Global League table to the subjective methodology. She attributed that the criteria used by the agencies to rank universities are largely depends on the perception of select group of people

Once upon a time China had also gone through the similar problem, thereafter they came up with their own University Ranking System which is known as The Sanghai Ranking. It is initiated by Sanghai Jiao Tong University in 2003.Making it the first Global University Ranking with multifarious Indicators. In the fist edition of Sanghai Ranking, nine Chinees universities and three from India got placed in the top 500 ranking. Therefore, India had decided to start its own ranking system which would be suitable to the Indian context. You might have questions that “has these ranking been international level? As of now the NIRF has only ranked Indian Higher Education Institution (HEIs) however, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has said “the NIRF should be not a benchmark within the country but also globally, especially for the development countries
