Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), commonly called the Foreign Office or British Foreign Office, is a department of the Government of the United Kingdom. They are responsible for protecting and promoting British interests worldwide and were created by merging the Foreign Office and the Commonwealth Office.

Roles and Responsibilities
  1. The headlines are (a): to provide the DHC, wider network and London effective reporting and analysis on important political developments in the Region (Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and UT Chandigarh). This will include reporting on the Haryana Assembly Elections, Punjabi diaspora issues and any other issues of political importance.
  2. And (b) support post and network objectives through effective engagement with the press and by building an effective network of contacts within government/political circles.
  3. In detail: the successful candidate will follow the political developments in the region closely and report on them in a timely manner, including reporting on the Haryana elections through building a credible network of contacts. There will be a requirement, also, to report on other political issues of interest to the UK with a focus on the Punjab but including Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh should the need arise. 
  4. The successful candidate will also lead on our Press and Communications through forming strong relations with key media across the region using them to promote key UK messages and publicise the work of BDHC Chandigarh. He/she will also advise the DHC on media opportunities and public engagements whilst running our Post-wide twitter account.
  5. Given that Chandigarh is a very small Post, there might also be a requirement to help the wider team deliver events outside the usual parameters of the job. This provides further development opportunities and helps this Post with delivery.

Fluent written and spoken English and fluent spoken Hindi or Punjabi.

Other skills / experience / qualifications:
Essential on arrival:  An interest in politics and press in the four states that British Deputy High Commission Chandigarh covers.

Previous experience of working in politics and/or with the press is highly desirable

The salary will be INR 57,904 per month
