Geospatial Research Specialist

This position will be best performed by an experienced individual familiar with multi-sensor remote sensing data, processing and management, and expert level skills in software programming in geospatial domain for automation in cloud computing environments. The successful candidate will be expected to work diligently and cooperatively with the multidisciplinary project team, and perform responsibilities as assigned by Head of the Geoinformatics.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Develop and implement algorithms for remote sensing image processing, land use and land cover mapping, decision support tools, and data and product synthesis dissemination.
  2. Conduct baseline studies and site characterization for agricultural interventions.
  3. Working knowledge on biophysical and climate data, multi-criteria modeling.
  4. Provide geospatial applications and scaling services to ICARDA’s Research, including the CGIAR Research Program (CRP) activities.
  5. Contribute to geospatial research on DryArc that addresses key issues of resilient agro-ecosystems approach in ensuring food and nutritional security;
  6. Analyze data and publish scientific findings in high impact ISI journals;
  7. Contribute to institutional capacity building of national partners through training, supervision and technical backstopping.
  8. Develop sustainable intensification framework including spatio-temporal maps of agro ecosystems crop types, intensity, rice fallows, yield, and land suitability to support decision-making processes at different levels.
  9. Contribute to the Strategic Research Portfolio to the Dry-Arc initiative’ Multi-temporal and multispatial remote sensing image processing and analysis towards develop real-time agro-ecological decision layers in cloud- based platforms.
  10. Play key role in development of the rice-fallow decision support system for India.


  1. MSc in Geography, environmental sciences (preferably geospatial modeling) or a related subject with at least 7 years of experience;
  2. Proven experience in remote sensing and GIS tools; programming, algorithm development, Cloud computing;
  3. Working knowledge of the crop simulation models;
  4. Proven experience in field-based research, land use monitoring and assessment and climate change;
  5. Demonstrated experience in Spatial decision support systems in cloud-based platform
  6. Knowledge of, and experience in, participatory and community-based approaches
  7. Good knowledge of experimental design and statistical analysis;
  8. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English;
  9. Excellent interpersonal skills and proven experience working in a multi-partner, multi-disciplinary and multicultural teams
  10. Strong flexibility/adaptability and positive attitude towards work
  11. Excellent time management abilities.


  1. PhD in Geography, environmental sciences (preferably geospatial modeling) or a related subject with 5 years of experience;
  2. Publication record in ISI peer-reviewed journals.

Terms of appointment
This is a nationally recruited consultancy role with planned initial duration of 1 year, with possibility for further extension for up to 3 years.
