Project Associate

The Protection Associate is a member of the Protection Unit, UNHCR New Delhi, supporting the Office in the second half of 2019. The Protection Associate systematically analyzes data of persons of concern, identifies durable solutions wherever possible in close coordination with the Protection Unit, the Office in Chennai and partners, present cases for the Protection Panel as the secretariat and liaises with the Durable Solutions Unit. The Protection Associate assists in compiling and analysing information related to the Protection activities, and in drafting related correspondence and reports.

Accountability (key results that will be achieved)

  • The protection of populations of concern is met through the application of International and National Law, relevant UN/UNHCR protection standards and IASC principles.
  • Protection activities are guided by the UNHCR country protection strategy.
  • The participation of persons of concern is facilitated through continuous assessment and evaluation using participatory, rights and community based approaches.
  • Protection incidents are immediately identified and reported.
Responsibility (process and functions undertaken to achieve results)

  • Stay abreast of political, social, economic and cultural developments that have an impact on the protection environment.
  • Consistently apply International and National Law and applicable UN/UNHCR and IASC policy, standards and codes of conduct.
  • Monitor Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all protection/solutions activities.
  • Assist in identifying durable solutions for the largest possible number of persons of concern through voluntary repatriation, local integration and where appropriate, resettlement.
  • Contribute to the design, implementation and evaluation of protection related AGD based programming with implementing and operational partners.
  • Contribute to effective information management through the provision of disaggregated data on populations of concern and their problems.
  • Participate in initiatives to capacitate relevant institutions and NGOs
1-Completion of Secondary education and advanced training/certification in law, human rights or a related field.
2-Minimum of 4 years of previous relevant job experience. Those with a university degree require 2 years of work experience.
1-University degree in Law, Human Rights, International Relations or other clearly related disciplines.
2-Knowledge of international refugee law and human rights law.
3-Completion of UNHCR learning programmes or specific training relevant to functions of the position.
4-Previous work experience with UNHCR or in refugee status determination
5-Past experience in working with refugee or displaced communities
6-  Previous work experience with UNHCR India is an advantage.
